I am constantly teaching myself. Coursera for AI product management. LinkedIn Learning. Podcasts on the treadmill. Industry reports on weekends. Blogs and newsletters at night.
If you are a leader in this space, you know the deal. Staying current is not an event in Vegas. It is a permanent condition.
Last week I opened a Coursera project from my AI product management program and saw the estimated time: 10 to 15 minutes.
Ten to fifteen minutes for a stack of files to read, a wireframe to produce, and a set of judgment-heavy feedback questions.
Maybe an LLM can generate something in that window. A human cannot do it responsibly. Not me, not you.
I could not even download the files and open a clean working session in 10 minutes. Just orienting to the material, framing the right questions, and getting to a place where I could think clearly took longer than the entire time allocation.
And I do this for a living. I am a COO who works with AI tools every day.
So who, exactly, is this timeline designed for?
The compression problem
There is a particular optimism infecting how organizations think about AI right now:
AI makes everything faster.
Therefore everything should take less time.
Therefore we can ask more and more of high performers in less and less time.
This logic has a fatal flaw.
It skips the human.
AI does not eliminate the cognitive load of understanding a problem.
AI does not replace the judgment required to evaluate an output.
AI does not do the work of learning something new, making sense of unfamiliar context, or deciding what the right question even is.
Those are still human tasks. They take human time.
The numbers show the same pattern at scale.
AI predictions failed in 2025 for three structural reasons: hype amplification created unrealistic timelines, enterprise complexity was systematically underestimated, and forecasters measured capability rather than adoption.

A Coursera module that allocates 15 minutes for a complex project is not reflecting AI capability. It is reflecting hype.
The enthusiast in every org chart
Now let’s talk about where this becomes expensive.
In most organizations, there is at least one manager who has seen a demo, attended a conference, and come back convinced AI will solve the productivity equation.
They are not wrong that AI is powerful.
They are wrong about what it costs to deploy it responsibly.
I see the same pattern repeatedly:
Tools get added to workflows before anyone asks if they are compliant.
AI agents get connected to internal systems before security reviews what data they can access.
Apps get shipped because they looked functional during a build session.
Platforms like Lovable, Base44, Bolt.new, and Create.xyz have democratized software creation. Anyone can describe what they want and produce a working app quickly. That is remarkable.
But remarkable does not mean ready.
Researchers analyzed over 5,600 publicly available vibe-coded applications and identified more than 2,000 vulnerabilities, 400+ exposed secrets, and 175 instances of personally identifiable information, including medical records, IBANs, and phone numbers, in live production systems.

The Base44 story is instructive. Wiz Research discovered a critical authentication flaw where two API endpoints required no authentication. An attacker only needed an app ID, visible in the app URL, to register and access private applications, bypassing SSO.

It was patched in 24 hours. But the exposure window was real. Users who assumed production safety had no idea it existed.

The code looked fine. It behaved in ways nobody tested for.
This is not an argument against these tools. I use AI constantly and it has changed how I work.
But there is a gap between “this works in a demo” and “this is safe to connect to enterprise data.”
That gap is where compliance violations happen. That is where data leaks happen. That is where SOC 2 conversations get uncomfortable.
The governance gap
The broader picture at enterprise level is not much better.
AI tools are deployed at 73% of organizations surveyed, but governance that enforces security and policy in real time has reached only 7%. That is a 66-point structural gap between adoption and control.
In the same period, 88% of organizations reported confirmed or suspected AI agent security incidents.

Nearly half of respondents, 49%, reported using AI tools not sanctioned by their employer at work. In many cases, sensitive business data has already been shared with these platforms.

These are not edge cases. They are the predictable output of enthusiasm outrunning judgment.
Regulators are responding accordingly. The FTC’s Operation AI Comply targeted deceptive AI marketing. Italy fined OpenAI €15 million for GDPR violations in training data processing. Regulators have made clear they expect documented controls and technical safeguards, not aspirational ethics statements.

The discipline leaders are skipping
There is a version of AI adoption that is simply pressure transfer.
The organization lacks time, people, or process. AI becomes the answer to a question that was never properly defined.
The Coursera assignment is not really about AI capability. It is about an institution assuming that AI removes the need to think carefully about time, context, and human effort.
The manager rolling out AI agents is not always reckless. They are responding to pressure to show results.
But someone must pause and ask: what does this require from the humans on the other end?
That pause is product discipline. It starts with questions like these:
Who has to do what?
In what sequence?
What does the handoff look like between AI output and human judgment?
Where is the risk, and who owns it?
A risk leader I know put it plainly:

That is not conservative. It is accurate.
What the data says about ROI
The companies that thrive are not those chasing the latest model releases.
They do the unglamorous work of integration:
Build evaluation frameworks.
Redesign workflows.
Measure business impact rather than theoretical capability.

Reckoning is not a reason to stop building with AI. It is a reason to build more honestly.
It is a reason to tell a course designer: this assignment needs 90 minutes, not 15.
It is a reason to tell an enthusiastic manager: before we deploy this agent, we need to know what data it touches, who approved it, and what happens when it is wrong.
The thing I actually believe
I am committed to staying current. Multiple platforms, multiple formats, constant investment in learning.
Not because I have to. Because the gap between knowing and doing only closes when someone is paying attention to both sides.
Staying current also means being honest about what AI does not change:
The time required to think clearly.
The judgment required to evaluate an output.
The accountability required when something goes wrong.
AI is a tool. A powerful and genuinely useful one.
The most valuable thing it has given me is not speed. It is the ability to think at a higher level, to move from “what do I write?” to “what am I actually trying to say?”
That shift still requires a human being who knows what good looks like.
The professionals who will thrive in the AI era are not the ones handing everything to an AI and reporting back in 10 minutes.
They are the ones who know what those 10 minutes actually buy you, and what they do not.
